How To Refinish an Old Nightstand

refinish nightstand

I have been on the hunt for new nightstands since moving into our new home, and I have been very unsuccessful in my search.  When I finally got sick of looking at my old wooden nightstand, I was considering dropping it off to goodwill.  Then I ran across a fabulous, antique silver nightstand tutorial on Pinterest and decided that I would give it a try on mine.   I really surprised myself with how well it came out!  It looks so different than before and much more sophisticated!  I just love it!

nightstand how to

This is how the nightstand originally looked.  It was pretty unsightly with dents and water stains.

First I spray painted it with Krylon Metallic Brilliant Silver.  I forgot to take a photo of the paint, but I bought it at Michael’s.  I’ve also linked it for you.

You can kind of see in the photo that it looks a bit spotty, but don’t worry.  Once you antique it, the spots are no longer visible.

Next I mixed my glaze to antique the nightstand.  I found this glaze at Lowes for around $13.  I think some stores sell one that is already tinted, but my local Lowes was out of stock.  So I used some old paints that I had at home to make it the color I needed.  A little paint goes a long way when tinting your glaze.  You want it to be transparent with a hint of color.

Once your glaze is mixed, take a large paint brush (it’ll save you on time), and paint the glaze all over the furniture making sure to get the glaze in all of the nooks and crannies.  That will give it more of an antique look.

Finally wipe the glaze with a lintless cloth or an old t-shirt.  You can repeat the glaze process until you get your desired look.

Voila!  You have a fancy antique silver nightstand!
